American Social Media Personality Fined Following Mass Electric Bike Gathering on Sydney Harbour Bridge
New South Wales authorities have levied a penalty against an American social media personality and handed out two driving violation citations for alleged reckless operation following a large group of electric bicycle users gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during peak-hour traffic on Tuesday.
The Incident: A Prohibited Ride
A gathering of around 40 individuals operating electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the primary roadway of the bridge, where cycling is prohibited. The riders subsequently reversed direction and rode through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.
"This had a risk of serious injury or fatalities," remarked a senior police official David Driver on Wednesday.
Police indicated they did not chase right away the riders out of concerns for public safety but instead located the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.
Penalties Issued for Influencer
On Saturday, police announced they had served the American online personality who goes by the influencer, 26, with two traffic infringement notices for careless operation (with no death or previous bodily harm), with a fine of $562 and penalty points per notice, connected to the bridge incident. They added that inquiries were continuing.
The personality reportedly has over 3.4m subscribers on one platform and more than 1.2 million on the social media app.
Influencer's Comments
The online figure gave comments to a major newspaper this week following the event spread rapidly on digital platforms, stating he was sorry for giving "bike life" a negative image.
"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was one of the safest ride-outs I have witnessed," he told the publication. "I am a visitor here, and I intend to abide by the laws and norms of Sydney. So when I decided to do a public meeting it did not involve a ride-out, it was just to greet people near the bridge."
"I’m unfamiliar with the city, I am to blame we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: whether the group completes the entirety of the bridge and turns around, which is a crime. Or we turn around, essentially, before we’re on the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to go back."
Broader Context on Electric Bike Rules
The increase of electric bicycles on roads nationwide has prompted growing calls for regulation. A senior government official, Mark Butler, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "total menace on the road."
"Kids have done reckless acts on bikes since the invention of the early bicycle [but] the harm that are coming into our hospital emergency departments are absolutely devastating," he stated. "We must ensure we stop these things coming into the country [and] officers are granted the authority to take strong action, to take them away, to destroy them, to dispose of them."
The state recorded over two hundred injuries related to ebikes in 2024. However, in the initial half of the following year, that number jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four deaths.
