Explosion Claims 3 Law Enforcement Officers While Executing Eviction Action in the Verona Area
A trio of officers were killed and more than a dozen people were hurt in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The detonation took place as police and firefighters went into the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three victims who died served in the Italian military police.
Legal Proceedings
A man and a woman were arrested at the site and one more individual who ran away subsequent to the blast was found not long after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location showed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the siblings.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents triggered the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told the media.
A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our members,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
The official thought the blast had taken place on a story above the entrance and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed officers had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to local news, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
