A substantial bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the calendar year.

The winning offer for the 243kg fish came from the company of a popular sushi chain, which operates restaurants across the country and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," remarked the entrepreneur, a familiar bidder at the traditional first sale.

Known as the Tuna King, this businessman is noted for making substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.

Auction Surprise and Record-Setting Past

After the auction, the successful bidder informed reporters that he was "surprised at the amount," stating, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price soared rapidly."

This latest acquisition tops his own historic purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Even after once commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to surpass his own record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically characterized by sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which stated the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.

The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter processed for customers at the winner's sushi establishments soon after the auction was finished.

"I sense like I've started the year in a good way after consuming something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one satisfied customer.
